DVDIdle
- How does it work?
It's very simple! DVDIdle works in the background, automatically caching the output of your software DVD player. Unlike SMARTDRV.EXE or other cdrom cache programs, DVDIdle implements the cache "on the fly". It caches the data prior to playing. After playing the cached data, DVDIdle releases them. For example: Your DVD drive reads for 2 minutes, then sleeps for 16 minutes while the cache is being played, then reads for 2 minutes, then sleeps for 16 minutes, and so on. In this way, your DVD drive's lifetime is extended.
- While running DVDIdle, the DVD playback is very jerky. Why?
You should check the DMA settings of your DVD drive and hard disk. DMA ( Direct Memory Access ) will dramatically reduce the CPU usage when transferring data. If a high speed drive is not using DMA, it will never reach it's rated speed. This results in decreased performance, since the DVD device depends entirely upon the speed of the CPU. You can download a free utility DVDSpeed to test your DVD drive's real speed. If it's lower than 3x, DVDIdle cannot work properly. How to enable DMA?
